Today, not only has a true Pathmark celebrity died, but also a great actor. James Karen, who died earlier today, was known for his various roles in Hollywood hits like Poltergeist, Return Of The Living Dead, and Pursuit of Happyness. Not only were these hits in Hollywood, but hits for myself. Poltergeist has to be one of my favorite movies, by far. There is nothing superior to it. Just like the old saying, "they don't make 'em like they used to" He was also known in the retail world for playing one of the most timeless characters to ever be witnessed on television. He went by many names... "The Pathmark Guy", "Pathmark Man", "Mr. Karen", "Jimmy", and "Hard Hat" among others. But his point of being on these commercials was to help various metropolitan New Yorkers save money during one of the oddest economical times-- the 80's. Karen was also born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, which didn't have a Pathmark, but brewed and distributed Pathmark brand beer well into his time playing his role as The Pathmark Man on TV. Let's take a moment to cherish his well-lived life. |
