This week at P's and Q's we're taking a look at a typical 2000's store. It opened as a Superfresh, and was transitioned to a Pathmark Sav-a-center as A&P scrambled to find their 'piece of resistance' for lower-class, and also New York-style towns with a heavy amount of commuters to and from NY.
Devon is a bustling suburb near Malvern-- the headquarters of Acme. They have a location in the town, with it being the first to receive the Quality Built decor package (it was a prototype). There is also a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and former A&P/Superfresh on the other side of town, a former centennial model. The ideal situation. Similar to what happened in Bethlehem, which was one of the closest stores near me at the time before closing.
This store has a pretty deluxe facade. It has diamonds instead of planks. The infamous arch above the sign has neon lighting inside.
PlazaACME took these photos a few weeks before the store closed...
Produce alcove window.
Early 2000's decor flooring. Diamonds in the service departments, Plaid in the produce. Notice how this store got a very brief "Sav-A-Center" update. This location is nearly identical to the former Bethlehem store.
Meat department wrapping up. This store was left with all of the old equipment from Superfresh. The plaid flooring starts on this side of the store.
And, to wrap it up, a video...
... and a look at the former Centennial A&P.
