A&P was one of the most successful and well-known supermarket chains in the Netherlands up until the early 2000's. On the internet, there is nothing about A&P being in the Netherlands at all-- except for this commercial, and a list of supermarket chains in the Netherlands on Wikipedia. This is an exclusive look inside of an A&P in the Netherlands.
In the commercial you see an obvious resemblance of the Fresh 1.0 decor's Canvas Boxes we all know. Was A&P's Netherlands stores the inspiration for the Fresh series? This commercial aired in 1995. The first Fresh store opened in Denville, New Jersey in 2004, almost ten years later.
I roughly translated this commercial, here's what is said:
Good Evening!
This week at A&P, Coca-Cola, Fanta, or Sprite, three 1.5 liter bottles of your choice for only $4.75.
(saying to anchor) We can share! A&P Chips for only $0.79.
(saying to co-anchor) They're mine.
If anyone can get a better translation, please do! I'd love to have a better understanding of this commercial.
Update: I contacted the Tengelmann
Group (A&P Parent Company) in Germany, and they said that A&P never officially had stores in the
Netherlands. Tengelmann licensed the name to a Dutch supermarket company
and wore it as its carcass until the early 2000’s, when it was sold to another
supermarket company.
